SCHATZ EARNS SILVER CUP CROWN AFTER FINISHING SECOND AND FOURTH
SARVER, PA - Donny Schatz came to Lernerville Speedway looking to win
the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup. At the end of the night, he was
award the Silver Cup, but it wasn't exactly what he was hoping for.
Schatz raced Tony Stewart Racing's (TSR) No. 15 Armor All/STP backed
J&J to second and fourth-place finishes in the Twin 30's and by
doing so was award the overall crown. The four-time and reigning
champion would much rather have won the A-Feature events though.
"We come to win races," said Schatz following the race. "In the first
feature, I thought I was going to be able to get Lance (Dewease) and
win the race, but we just came up short. In the second one, we worked
our way forward, but didn't get in enough traffic to run down the guys
up front. We are getting closer. The guys on this Armor All team have
been working hard and we feel like we've got a lot to accomplish in
these next few weeks."
Schatz started the night by qualifying second in the field of 39 cars. He finished third in the second heat race and came home fifth in the dash event. The program included a pair of 30-lap A-Feature events. Schatz started fifth in the first one and steadily made his way into the top three late in the race. After second place running, Dale Blaney, ran out of fuel, a final restart gave Schatz the chance he hoped, but he simply couldn't clear Lance Dewease on the final lap and ended up in second.
The program then offered the fans a second 30-lap main event. This time the lineup was determined by the outcome of feature event number one. Schatz finished second, so he started 13th. Once again, he made his way forward, and reached the top-five. Fourth was as far as he could get in the race.
The team now will turn their focus to Williams Grove Speedway and the Summer Nationals event. Schatz will look to win his fourth Summer Nationals crown, previously he won the event in 2003, 2007 and 2008, and try to ad the $20,000 first prize and build on his 15 career wins at the famous track. On Sunday, the Outlaws make their way to New York for an event at Lebanon Valley Speedway.
