FARGO, N.D. (September 11, 2018) – Coming off a win Wednesday night at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Ore., Donny Schatz and the Tony Stewart Racing No. 15 team were looking to keep their momentum going into the Gold Cup at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif. on Sept. 7-8. Unfavorable results in qualifying put the nine-time and defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion behind the eight ball both nights, but Schatz was able to charge his way forward each night in the main event.
The weekend began with Schatz timing in 13th quick in Flight A in time trials, which led to him grabbing the fifth and final transfer spot in the heat race. Schatz started 17th on the grid for the 30-lap feature and brought his Shaver powered J&J home in the 12th position.
Similarly on Saturday, Schatz qualified 14th quick in Flight A, before he recorded a fifth-place finish in his heat. After Schatz started back in row 10 for the feature, the current series point leader raced his way up to the eighth position to score his 53rd top 10 of the World of Outlaws season.
“We just missed it a bit in qualifying each night and that put us behind early,” said Schatz. “When you race with the best in the business every night, you have to be on top of your game every time you hit the race track. This Tony Stewart Racing team never gave up all weekend. My guys gave me a great car and we were able to move forward in the feature both nights.”
The final west coast swing of the season for the World of Outlaws wraps up this weekend. On Wednesday, Placerville Speedway hosts the Brad Sweet Placerville Short Track Showdown. On Friday and Saturday, the series returns to the scenic Calistoga Speedway for the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown.
Schatz is the defending champion of the Wine Country Outlaw Showdown. Last year, the Fargo, N.D. driver passed California native, Brad Sweet, with five laps to go to secure the $12,000 win.
